Equipment on the job

How the math works — formulas, burn rates & sources

Per-unit engines (excavators, dozers, loaders, etc.)

GPH = HP × Load Factor × BSFC ÷ fuel density. Diesel BSFC 0.37 lb/hp·hr, density 7.05 lb/gal → ~0.052 gal/HP-hr at full load (matches the 0.05–0.06 field rule). Gasoline uses BSFC 0.50, density 6.17 (gas engines burn more volume per HP).

Load factors

EPA / USACE NONROAD (Table 10): excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, rollers, haul trucks 0.59; cranes, pumps, compressors, gensets 0.43; skid steers, backhoes, welders 0.21 (nudged up in presets). Intensity scales it: Light ×0.7, Typical ×1.0, Heavy ×1.3 (cap 0.85).

Generators

Published gal/hr chart interpolated by kW + load %, matching ~0.07 gal per kWh (~14 kWh/gal). 100 kW full ≈ 7.4 GPH; 500 kW ≈ 35.7 GPH.

Fuel types & DEF

Each machine is tagged off-road diesel (dyed), on-road diesel (clear), or gasoline, and volumes are totaled separately — dyed and clear diesel are stored in separate tanks for tax/legal reasons. DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) for Tier 4 Final SCR engines is estimated at ~3% of diesel volume (editable) and sized into jugs / drums / totes.

Reefer, light towers, on-road

Reefer continuous ≈ 0.9 GPH, cycling ≈ 0.5; diesel light tower ≈ 0.4 GPH. On-road: gal/day = miles/day ÷ MPG.

Tank sizing, style & pump

Per fuel, recommended tank = smallest standard tank (or fewest tanks of the largest allowed size) whose usable capacity (default 80%) covers daily burn × (target days between fills + reserve buffer). Tank style follows the site: no containment → double-wall self-contained; existing berm/containment → single-wall in containment (lower cost). Pump follows power: 110V → electric transfer pump; 12V → battery/DC pump; none → gravity feed (elevated stand) or hand pump. Aggregate aboveground storage ≥ 1,320 gal triggers a federal SPCC containment + spill-plan requirement (flagged automatically).

Reality check

Estimates assume typical conditions. Cold weather, altitude, heavy grades, aged engines and continuous max production push burn higher — carry the reserve buffer and confirm against delivery tickets on live jobs.
